Federal League Games April 19th

Don Sutton and the Grays had an easy time of it in Boston, with a 10-1 win over the Pilgrims.  Pie Traynor was a triple short of hitting for the cycle.  The New York Knights enjoyed their stay in the Big Easy, with a 5-1 win over the Jazz Kings.  "Eggie" Hensley improved to 2-1 with a shutdown performance for the Gothams.  The Liberty finished strong at home, but not enough to overcome the Senators 6 run lead in the first two frames.  Babe Ruth and Bill Terry powered the Washington offense.

A Great Game In Detroit

The Model Ts battled back, and tied it up in the 9th. Each team had their chances in extra innings. I think the Ts were too quick to pinch hit for their pitchers, and had only a tired Dean to resort to in the end. Still, they nearly managed to tie it in the bottom of the 17th, and had runners at the corners with only one out when Duffy hit into a 1-6-3 game ending DP.

Continental League Games April 18th

The St. Louis River Captains overcame a 5 run first inning deficit to defeat Dizzy Dean and the Detroit Model Ts in extras today.  After starting pitcher Bill Holland was shelled in the first, Roosevelt Davis held the River Captains together, throwing 4 scoreless innings, before yielding to John Donaldson in the 6th inning.  Meanwhile the River Captains kept chopping away at the lead, to force a 10th inning and eventual win.  In Chicago, Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity and Leon Day dueled to a 1-0 victory for the White Bears, with the only score being a first inning Lou Gehrig homer.  Cincinnati also managed a tight 2-1 win over the visiting Commodores.

News Update

The Boston Pilgrims revealed that they'll be shipping Red Parnell to the Cincinnati Beergardners for outfielder Heine Manush.  Parnell has gotten off to a slow start this year, as had Manush.  Manush has needed to play a supporting role for a star studded Washington outfield, and he may be able to help Boston, which will be without star center fielder Willie Mays for another week due to injury.

News Update

The Continental League President's office announced this morning that the Kansas City Cattle Barons, which have cooled down after their hot start, made a bold move to acquire relief ace Herb Pennock from the Chicago White Bears.  In exchange, they'll send Dizzy Dismukes to the White Bears.  Pennock has already made 7 appearances, and started sharply, but has not been effective in his last 3.  Dismukes is a starter, but has not been able to last more than 6 innings in his two starts.  KC hopes that with their better rotation, Pennock can get some much needed rest and return to his earlier form, while Chicago gets a needed starter.

Federal League Games April 16th

The New York Knights rallied for 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to overtake the Pittsburgh Grays, 9-4.  Christy Mathewson had held the Knights to 2 runs for the first 7 innings, but in the 8th, the Grays' bullpen took the ball, and the Knights quickly took advantage of their subpar performance.  Last week's Player of the Week, Mule Suttles, shows no sign of slowing down with his 4 hit performance today.  At Penmark Park in Philadelphia, Walter Johnson threw a complete game victory over the visiting Jazz Kings.  Eddie Mathews' 2 run homer proved to be the game winner for the first place Liberty.  Finally, Judy Johnson and Dick Redding propelled the Pilgrims to a 7-2 win over the Senators.  Boston is still awaiting stars Willie Ways and Bill Monroe, and hope their return can propel them towards the top of the league.

News Update

Detroit, MI: Reports are that Mike Schmidt (Detroit Model Ts) will miss 2 weeks after leaving yesterday's game with St. Louis.  Joe Sewell, Alec Radcliffe, and Tommy McCarthy are all potential replacements.

Continental League Games April 16th

The Model Ts returned to their winning ways with a 3 -1 win at home over the River Captains. Don Drysdale turned in a sharp performance. The victory came at a cost, however, as Detroit third sacker suffered an injury and will be out for a couple weeks. This will test the Detroiters to see if they can keep winning without one of their starters.  The Cattle Barons remain cold as the White Bears dominated them 5-2.  "Old Hoss" Radbourne kept Kansas City in check while Joey D and the Bears were able to push 5 baserunners across.  Chicago has relied on some lesser known players such as Bonnie Serrell to improve their record to 5-6 after a slow start.  Another team that got off to a slow start has remained there, but the Cincinnati Beergardners did  manage their second win.  Sandy Koufax earned the save.  He'll need to continue to pitch well if Cincinnati is to make anything of this season, however.

Federal League Player of the Week

Mule Suttles

Perhaps best analogized to a Ryan Howard type, George "Mule" Suttles hit for good average and tremendous power, while also striking out frequently as a result of his free swinging style.  With his 50 ounce bat, he was known for his tremendous home runs, one estimated at 600 feet.

He was, unsurprisingly, not terribly swift and mobile, and his fielding range was not distinguished, but he was able to handle the balls he did get to well.  Hit bat, however, powered his team, the St. Louis Stars, to championships in 1928, 1930 and 1931.  After the Negro National League folded at the end of the 1931 season, Suttles went on to play in Chicago and Detroit among other venues, including Cuba for winter ball.  After a hitting coach in Chicago helped him to adjust his free swinging style to cut down on strikeouts, Suttles helped Chicago claim a championship 1933.  Suttles still managed a home run in every 13.5 at bats, while maintaining a .315 batting average.

The Giants themselves fell victim of the Great Depression, and once more Suttles was on the move, this time to the Newark Eagles.  With his .356 batting average and home run every 12.5 at bats, he was part of what was known as the "million dollar infield."  Throughout the last half of the 1930s, Suttles continued to pile up gaudy stats.

Suttles also barnstormed (played exhibition games on organized tours for extra money in the off season) as did many ball players of the era, both black and white.  When a white team's pitcher faced Suttles, he asked Leo Durocher for advice.  "Just pitch and pray," was all one of baseball's great managers could offer.  Eventually, Suttles became a manager in the Negro Leagues.  He died in 1968 at the age of 67.

Suttles was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
