Federal League Games April 25th

The rejuvenated Boston Pilgrims brought their "A" game to town, scoring six runs off Liberty hurler Walter Johnson.  The Liberty rallied back, however, and the game see-sawed until the 9th inning.  Down 6 to 5, two outs and Oscar Johnson on first, "Bullet" Joe Rogan hit a blast to left for a walk-off home run giving Philadelphia the win.  A similarly dramatic finish played out in Washington as Babe Ruth hit his second home run of the day with Cap Anson aboard to  also give Washington a much needed 6-5 win over New Orleans.  Finally, Eddie Plank disappointed the New York faithful with a masterful complete game, yielding only a single unearned run as the Pittsburgh Grays displayed their impressive offensive potential.  Shortstop John Ward notched three hits and scored three runs.  Plank fanned 10 Knights.

night.

The win went to Johnson(3-1) who allowed 6 runs in the game. Sam Streeter(3-1)
was the loser in relief. Philadelphia's manager was in great spirits in his
post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling
comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my
counterpart, Boston's manager, feels right now - and it's not very good.
It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!'

Continental League Games April 25th

Addie Joss got the start for the Model Ts, but once again it was Charlie Gehringer fueling their offense with a single and a stolen base, and then scoring on Chino Smith's double to center.  Mickey Mantle blasted his 4th homer.  Joss held the White Bears to a single run as Detroit cruised, 6-1.  Joe McGinnity yielded 5 runs in 5 innings in the loss.  The Kansas City Cattle Barons were unable to hold a lead going into the late innings, sacrificing a strong 7 inning start by Juan Marichal.  In a rare performance, Whitey Ford yielded 4 runs in two innings as the St. Louis River Captains rallied past the Barons in the top of the 9th inning.  Superman Pennington's two run homer was the big blow that placed St. Louis on top.  Finally, the Cincinnati Beergardners managed to salvage their contest against the Nashville Commodores, 6-5.  Cinci had built on early lead only to see Nashville battle back.  But in the bottom of the 9th, Travis Jackson drove in Spoony Palm for the Beergardners' game winner.

Did You Know???

With the return of Willie Mays to his perch in center, the Boston Pilgrims are starting an "all one" set of outfielders (Clements, Mays and Aaron).

Federal League Games April 24th

Leroy Matlock was just good enough to contain the visiting Pittsburgh Grays, yielding only 2 runs despite giving up 10 hits and 3 walks.  Opposing pitcher Christy Mathewson only allowed 6 hits.  A big factor, however, was the ability of the Liberty to run on Grays' catcher Jimmie Foxx who does not have a strong throwing arm.  Philadelphia swiped 4 bases, making the most of their opportunities.  New York triumphed over a struggling Washington team, 5-1, with Ernie Banks and Frank Robinson each going deep.  The Senators had their "stopper," Smokey Joe Williams on the mound, so the loss was especially concerning for a Washington team that has now dropped four straight games and is lingering in the league's cellar.  Dick Redding was too tough on the New Orleans Jazz Kings, shutting them out with only 6 hits.  The closest New Orleans came to scoring occurred when Jackie Robinson tried to score from first on a ball hit down the third baseline, but was thrown out at home by Roberto Clements.  Boston managed only 2 runs, but, thanks to Redding, it was all they needed.  Hank Aaron had his third home run for Boston.

Win:Matlock(3-0) Loss:Mathewson(1-2) Save:Clarkson(1st)

In a two run game the Philadelphia Liberty got by the Pittsburgh Grays by the
score of 4 to 2.

Philadelphia claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run
on 2 hits. Ty Cobb delivered a single. Cobb then stole second base. Two
outs later Eddie Mathews stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Oscar
Heavy Johnson came up and he was hit by a pitch. Joe Morgan came to the
plate and doubled. Pittsburgh had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.

Leroy Matlock(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. John Clarkson got the save, his 1st. The loss was charged
to Christy Mathewson(1-2).

'It was a tough one to lose' said Pittsburgh's manager 'We'll get them next

At Yankee Stadium the New York Knights easily handled the Washington Senators
by the score of 5 to 1.

New York took the lead for good in the 3rd inning as they scored 2 runs on 2
base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Bill Drake(1-2) and
New York. That was all the run support Drake required. New York had 13 hits
overall, while Washington had 7.

Drake got help from Hal Newhouser who was credited with his 2nd save. Smokey
Joe Williams(3-1) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits

Homeruns- H.Aaron(3rd)

Dick Redding tossed a complete game shutout as the Boston Pilgrims defeated
the New Orleans Jazz Kings by a score of 2 to 0 at Braves
Field.

Redding(3-1) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits
and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.05 to 1.59. Boston banged
out 8 hits on the night.

The loss was charged to Pete Alexander(2-2). He pitched 7 innings allowing 8
hits and no walks.

Continental League Games April 24th

The Model Ts triumphed again over their Nashville counterparts by a narrow 4-3 margin.  Once again, Detroit received a strong performance from their moundsman, Don Drysdale who yielded only a single earned run in his complete game victory, running his record to 3-0.  The Model Ts scored 4 runs, making the most of only 5 hits.  Once again, Detroit second sacker Charlie Gehringer was in the middle of things, drawing two walks in addition to his single, scoring 2 of Detroit's 4 runs.  Frank Wickware made his first appearance for his new team, pitching one scoreless inning in relief and striking out one.  Wickware had been traded while on the DL from Detroit to Nashville in exchange for Bob Lemon.  The Cattle Barons took another one on a cold and wet day in Cincinnati.  The field was in poor shape, and this redounded to the benefit of the hurlers as KC won a 2-1 contest.  Robin Roberts struck on 7 in 7 1/3 innings, and Cincinnati pitchers totaled 10 between them.  Despite bad weather in Chicago, the River Captain and White Bears locked horns.  River Captains starter Bill Holland had a no-hitter going in the fifth when he slipped fielding a bunt, and strained his ankle, having to leave the game.  The White Bears prevailed 1-0, with Old Hoss Radbourne getting a shutout.
