Federal League Games April 23rd

The big news was Willie Mays's return to the Boston outfield after spending the first two weeks of the season on the disabled list, and he wasted no time making his presence felt with a home run and two RBIs, helping fuel a dramatic 5 run rally to put the Pilgrims in the win column, 8-7.  The Pittsburgh Grays rallied in the 9th to score twice and overcome the Liberty, 4-3, when the winning run scored on a play at the plate that Josh Gibson was unable to successfully block.  Willard Brown had a game tying pinch hit double and then scored the game winner as John Montgomery Ward drove him in.  New York took advantage of two costly Washington errors, and erased a three run deficit to win, 4-3.  Until that point, Nolan Ryan was dominating the home town Knights, but despite ko'ing 9 in 6 innings and yielding no earned runs, he was saddled with the loss.
