Continental League Player of the Week

Big Bill Foster

"Big Bill" or "Willie" Foster was a great lefty in the Negro Leagues, perhaps the best ever.  He was the half-brother of Rube Foster, the pitcher who became the driving force behind the creation of the Negro Leagues.  Foster's strength lay in his ability to throw a wide variety of pitches from the same motion.

Foster pitched for the Chicago American Giants, one of the Negro League's greatest teams in the late 20s and early 30s, as well as many other teams.   Perhaps his greatest pitching performance came against a team of Major League stars in which he yieled no hits or runs in 8 innings, racking up nine strikeouts.  In a poignant comment, Charlie Gehringer told Foster that "If I could paint you white, I could get $150,000 for you right now."  Another person intimately familiar with major league pitchers, umpire Jocko Conlan, opined that "Foster was comparable to Herb Pennock, only faster and had beautiful control, adding that he was really something to watch."

In 1960, Foster became dean of men and the baseball coach at his alma mater, Alcorn State, where he coached until just before his death in 1978.

Foster was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Federal League Games April 15th

Early Wynn and Ed Walsh locked horns on a cold, wet field on an April afternoon, and shut down the opposition lineups. A rare defensive lapse by Pilgrims' superstar backstop Johnny Bench in the form of a passed ball allowed the game's only run. It was a tough loss for Walsh, who drops to 0-3 on the young season.  Bob Feller turned in a commanding performance for Philadelphia, and Eddie Mathews, in what is becoming a common sight at Penmar park, blasted a home run that proved to be all the Liberty needed in their 6-1 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Grays.  The performance of the day, however, belonged to "Smokey Joe" Wood of the Senators' pitching staff.  Wood blanked New York on 8 hits and no walks in a complete game, 5-0 shutout.  Harmon Killebrew went deep for Washington.

giving up 5 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Continental League Games April 15th

Chuck Klein walk off home run gives KC a 2-1 win over Cincinnati, although the home run came too late to give Barons' starter Satchel Paige a deserved win. Paige went 8 innings with 9 Ks, allowing only one run. Detroit returned to their winning ways, holding on to a 4-3 win when Mickey Mantle, sprinting all out, somehow caught a fly ball from Carl Yastrzemski that surely would have allowed Honus Wagner to score from first base with a game tying run. In Chicago, Joltin' Joe delivered a clutch hit to drive in two runs, leading the White Bears to their first series win over St. Louis after suffering defeats the last couple of days.

Chicago White Bears beat the St. Louis River Captains 9 to 6.

Chicago came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. The crucial
at-bat was provided by Joe Dimaggio who made the crowd come alive when he
ripped a base-knock which was good for two runs. Chicago finished with 15
hits in the victory.

Rube Marquard(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 4 innings. Tom
Williams(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning

run support Foster required. Nashville made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.

Red Faber(2-1) was given the loss. He pitched 4 innings giving up 6 hits and
2 walks. Despite losing Nashville's manager was optimistic after the game.
'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they
don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on
top.'

Continental League Games April 14th

The Kansas City Cattle Barons won in dramatic fashion over the Cincinnati Beergardners.  After tying the game in the bottom of the 11th with a 2 out home run by Hack Wilson, The Cattle Barons won on a "walk off" steal of home by pinch runner Sam Rice.  Cincinnati suffered yet another disappointing defeat in a game they feel they should have won.  This dramatic ending overshadowed Detroit's first loss of the season at the hands of the Nashville Commodores, who got to Dizzy Dean early.  Al Kaline went 5 for 5, and raked the Model T's pitching staff.  Finally, the River Captains managed to eke out a one run 9th inning win at Chicago.

Continental League Games April 13th

The River Captains won a wild one over the Chicago White Bears in extras.  Both teams went through their pitchers, substituting pinch hitters liberally in an attempt to pull out a victory, so it will be interesting to see how the pens shape up in tomorrow's contest.  Detroit wins an 8th straight behind a very solid effort from Jim Palmer.  Cincinnati got their fans hopes up with an early lead in KC only to see them quickly dampened as Juan Marical closed the door after an error allowed the Beergardners a couple runs.
