Continental League Games April 28th

The Nashville Commodores finally had their home opener - an event delayed by construction at Martin Park.  Jesse Burkett ruined their home opener with a bases loaded triple, knocking in three runs to give Kansas City a 5-4 win.

Detroit's pitching staff showed its strain today, with a weary Dizzy Dean needing to throw a complete game, which allowed Cinci to score 8 runs and win 8-6.  Right now Detroit is working with 5 pitchers total, and will need to struggle for a week until injured pitchers start coming off the DL.

In St. Louis, the River Captains roughed up "Old Hoss" Radbourn for 7 runs and prevailed over the White Bears, 8-7.  All of the River Captains reached on at least one hit.  Roosevelt Davis, who was acquired shortly after the season begun, again pitched will, yielding only a massive solo shot to Ralph Kiner.

Federal League Games April 27th

In a matchup that saw two 0-4 pitchers each looking for their first win, Boston took on the Philadelphia Liberty.  Both Boston and Ed Walsh have not performed up to expectations this year.  Today may have been a breakthrough for each.  With Willie Mays health and back at center, the Pilgrims moved Hank Aaron to first base to keep Joe Jackson's bat on the lineup.  Gone was the Ed Walsh who started the season 0-4.  The result was a 9-0 dismantling of the Philadelphia squad.  Bob Gibson is now struggling at 0-5 with a 7.92 ERA.

In Washington, Nolan Ryan dominated Jazz King hitters, with 8 KOs.  Nap Lajoie, Pop Lloyd and Tris Speaker drove the Washington offense to a 5-1 victory.  Although Chet Brewer was strong in relief, the damage was already done.

In New York, Knights sluggers Ernie Banks and Oscar Charleston hit "moon shot" home runs, but the biggest blast of all belonged to Grays' catcher Ernie Campanella, whose grand slam put Pittsburgh up for good in their 9-4 win.  Fergie Jenkins and Vic Willis were hit hard, and it is becoming apparent that if New York is going to compete, they'll need to figure out their pitching.

Continental League Games April 27th

There was a lot of bad baseball played in Detroit, and most of it, surprisingly, was played by the league leading Model Ts, who lost to the Chicago White Bears 15-6.  Five Detroit pitchers yielded a total of 16 hits and 8 walks, and 3 errors led to 4 unearned runs.  Chicago third baseman George Davis delivered 4 base hits and Ralph Kiner drove in 3 when Detroit wasn't hurting itself.  The Cattle Barons were unable to capitalize on Detroit's misfortunes, however, due mostly to a three run homer by Willie McCovey and a strong performance by Bill Holland as the River Captains steamed past KC 5-2.  Red Faber and Amos Russie dueled well into a fair Cincinnati night.   It took extra innings for the home town Beergardners to notch a 3-1 win on a two run walk off by Roger Hornsby.

Federal League Games April 26th

Pitching was the name of the game at Penmar Park, although ultimately it was a pair of 6th inning home runs from home town favorites Josh Gibson and "Bullet Joe" Rogan that carried the Liberty to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Pilgrims from Boston.  Likewise, Boston's only run came on a solo shot from right fielder Hank Aaron.  The same weather system bogging down offenses in Philadelphia affected Washington, DC as well as New Orleans and Washington deadlocked at 3-3 after the statutory nine.  Washington carried the day in the 10th after Jazz King reliever Ted Trent walked home the game winner.  Trent had allowed the Senators to score twice and tie the game in the ninth.  His control, clearly affected by the cold and rain, was sorely lacking as he walked four batters in his 1.3 innings.  New Yorkers, however, enjoyed sunshine and cloudless skies for their battle with Pittsburgh.  They enjoyed the strong pitching of Grays' starter Don Sutton and the late inning heroics of Roy Campanella less.  Campy responded to a late effort by the Knights to knot the game at 2 in the 8th with a 9th inning solo shot, providing reliever Jose Mendez a chance at a save that he did not fail to grasp.

Federal League Games April 25th

The rejuvenated Boston Pilgrims brought their "A" game to town, scoring six runs off Liberty hurler Walter Johnson.  The Liberty rallied back, however, and the game see-sawed until the 9th inning.  Down 6 to 5, two outs and Oscar Johnson on first, "Bullet" Joe Rogan hit a blast to left for a walk-off home run giving Philadelphia the win.  A similarly dramatic finish played out in Washington as Babe Ruth hit his second home run of the day with Cap Anson aboard to  also give Washington a much needed 6-5 win over New Orleans.  Finally, Eddie Plank disappointed the New York faithful with a masterful complete game, yielding only a single unearned run as the Pittsburgh Grays displayed their impressive offensive potential.  Shortstop John Ward notched three hits and scored three runs.  Plank fanned 10 Knights.

Federal League Games April 24th

Leroy Matlock was just good enough to contain the visiting Pittsburgh Grays, yielding only 2 runs despite giving up 10 hits and 3 walks.  Opposing pitcher Christy Mathewson only allowed 6 hits.  A big factor, however, was the ability of the Liberty to run on Grays' catcher Jimmie Foxx who does not have a strong throwing arm.  Philadelphia swiped 4 bases, making the most of their opportunities.  New York triumphed over a struggling Washington team, 5-1, with Ernie Banks and Frank Robinson each going deep.  The Senators had their "stopper," Smokey Joe Williams on the mound, so the loss was especially concerning for a Washington team that has now dropped four straight games and is lingering in the league's cellar.  Dick Redding was too tough on the New Orleans Jazz Kings, shutting them out with only 6 hits.  The closest New Orleans came to scoring occurred when Jackie Robinson tried to score from first on a ball hit down the third baseline, but was thrown out at home by Roberto Clements.  Boston managed only 2 runs, but, thanks to Redding, it was all they needed.  Hank Aaron had his third home run for Boston.

Continental League Games April 24th

The Model Ts triumphed again over their Nashville counterparts by a narrow 4-3 margin.  Once again, Detroit received a strong performance from their moundsman, Don Drysdale who yielded only a single earned run in his complete game victory, running his record to 3-0.  The Model Ts scored 4 runs, making the most of only 5 hits.  Once again, Detroit second sacker Charlie Gehringer was in the middle of things, drawing two walks in addition to his single, scoring 2 of Detroit's 4 runs.  Frank Wickware made his first appearance for his new team, pitching one scoreless inning in relief and striking out one.  Wickware had been traded while on the DL from Detroit to Nashville in exchange for Bob Lemon.  The Cattle Barons took another one on a cold and wet day in Cincinnati.  The field was in poor shape, and this redounded to the benefit of the hurlers as KC won a 2-1 contest.  Robin Roberts struck on 7 in 7 1/3 innings, and Cincinnati pitchers totaled 10 between them.  Despite bad weather in Chicago, the River Captain and White Bears locked horns.  River Captains starter Bill Holland had a no-hitter going in the fifth when he slipped fielding a bunt, and strained his ankle, having to leave the game.  The White Bears prevailed 1-0, with Old Hoss Radbourne getting a shutout.
