Continental League Games April 17th



The Detroit Model Ts continued their winning ways, with a narrow win at home over St. Louis.  Jim Palmer was able to throw a complete game for Detroit.   In Chicago, KC pitcher Juan Marichal earned his third win with a strong outing over the White Bears, 4-1.  Carl Hubbell suffered his first loss.  The Beergardners finally let loose an offensive barrage, scoring 9 runs in the 8th inning to avoid yet another loss to Nashville.

Jim Palmer was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the Detroit Model Ts outscored the St. Louis River Captains 5 to
4.
 
Palmer(2-0) had a strong outing.  He allowed only 5 hits and 5 walks in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 3.46 to 2.45.  St. Louis made it exciting in
the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
The loss was charged to Phil Cockrell(0-1).  He got hit pretty hard, allowing
11 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  Despite losing St. Louis' manager
was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get over this one.  Sometimes the
breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't.  Any one of a dozen little things
go different, and we come out on top.'

Juan Marichal carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Chuck Klein hit one
over the fence at Schorling Park as the Kansas City Cattle Barons beat the
Chicago White Bears by the count of 4 to 1.
 
Marichal(3-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 7 innings allowing 4 hits and 2
walks.  The right-handed Marichal lost his chance for a no-hitter when Bonnie
Serrell singled with nobody out in the 6th inning.  Overall Kansas City
out-hit Chicago 9 to 4.  
 
Rollie Fingers was credited with his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Carl
Hubbell(1-1).  He gave up 7 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.  
 
 
NASHVILLE AT CINCINNATI

The Cincinnati Beergardeners tallied 9 runs in the 8th inning and easily
topped the Nashville Commodores; the final score was 9 to 3.
 
Cincinnati did all the necessary damage in the 8th inning as they showed no
mercy on Nashville blasting them for 8 hits and plating 9 runs.  The
highlight belonged to Dewey Creacy who made the crowd happy when he doubled
which was good for two runs.  Cincinnati had 12 hits for the game and
Nashville had 6.  
 
Willie Powell(1-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Phil
Niekro(0-2) was charged with the loss.  He was knocked around by Cincinnati,
allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
