Continental League Games April 6th

NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 2099 Continental League             Date: 4/7/2099
 
The Continental League kicked off with some tight games, with Negro League and other African-American players quickly asserting that they would not take a back seat to the white players. Among the stars of opening day were Larry Doby, Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige, Buck Ewing, Big Bill Foster and Roosevelt Davis, who arrived in St. Louis from Cincinnati just in time to pitch two scoreless innings in the River Boat Captains' loss to Nashville.

Buck Ewing smacked 2 triples at Redland Field where the Kansas City Cattle
Barons beat the Cincinnati Beergardeners 6 to 4.
 
Satchel Paige(1-0) pitched a fine game.  He was reached for 8 hits and 3 walks
in 7 innings.  Kansas City had 14 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 9.
 
Paige got help from Whitey Ford who earned his 1st save.  Willie Powell(0-1)
was the loser in relief.  He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 6 hits and
no walks.

The Detroit Model Ts toppled the Chicago White Bears by a 6 to 2 score at
Schorling Park.
 
Big Bill Foster(1-0) had a strong outing.  He didn't allow much, just 2 hits
and 2 walks in 6 innings.  Foster racked up 8 strikeouts.  Overall Detroit
out-hit Chicago 11 to 5.  
 
Jesse Haines was credited with his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Max
Manning(0-1).  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 6
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
NASHVILLE AT ST. LOUIS

One run was the difference at Terrapin Park as the Nashville Commodores
defeated the St. Louis River Captains 4 to 3.St. Louis threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.  
 
Bob Lemon(1-0) allowed 3 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Hoyt
Wilhelm earned his 1st save.  Cy Young(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He
allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.  
 
Despite losing St. Louis' manager was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get
over this one.  Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't.
Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
