Federal League Games April 6th


Willie Wells hit two home runs to elevate New Orleans to an opening day victory. Other highlights included a 5-4 stunner in the Bronx as the NY Knights comeback with a 2 run homer by Ernie Banks in th 9th, capped with a walk-off homer by Oscar Charleston in the 11th. Bob Feller of the Liberty logged the best pitching performance of the day with a 5-1 win over Boston.

The New York Knights nipped the Washington Senators in 11 innings 5 to 4 at
Yankee Stadium in a hard fought contest.The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 7th inning.  
 
The win was credited to Leroy Matlock(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
Rube Currie(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT BOSTON

At Braves Field the Philadelphia Liberty easily handled the Boston Pilgrims by
the score of 5 to 1.Waite Hoyt was perfect in relief and got the save, his
1st.  
 
The victory went to Bob Feller(1-0) who went 5 innings, allowing 1 run. The
losing pitcher was Ed Walsh(0-1).  He was knocked around by Philadelphia,
allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

Shortstop Willie Wells smashed 2 homeruns and Pete Alexander went the distance
as the New Orleans Jazz Kings defeated the Pittsburgh Grays by a score of 5
to 3 at Dodger Stadium.Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.  
 
The win was credited to Alexander(1-0) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
The loss was charged to Bill Byrd(0-1).  He served up 3 homeruns in his 8
innings.  
 
'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Pittsburgh's manager
'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'
