News Update
Detroit Model T started Jim Palmer's ankle was worse than feared, and he'll be on the 15 day DL. He joins teammates Mike Schmidt, Webster MacDonald, and Bob Lemon. While Schmidt is due back shortly, of more concern is the strain that having four pitchers on the DL will due to the remaining six pitchers who must carry the team for another week before MacDonald's return.
Detroit has lost more days to injury this year (77) than the rest of the Continental League combined (120). It will be interesting to see what this team can do if and when it can stay healthy. Meanwhile, the rest of the league has a chance to catch up for now.
Continental League Games April 27th
There was a lot of bad baseball played in Detroit, and most of it, surprisingly, was played by the league leading Model Ts, who lost to the Chicago White Bears 15-6. Five Detroit pitchers yielded a total of 16 hits and 8 walks, and 3 errors led to 4 unearned runs. Chicago third baseman George Davis delivered 4 base hits and Ralph Kiner drove in 3 when Detroit wasn't hurting itself. The Cattle Barons were unable to capitalize on Detroit's misfortunes, however, due mostly to a three run homer by Willie McCovey and a strong performance by Bill Holland as the River Captains steamed past KC 5-2. Red Faber and Amos Russie dueled well into a fair Cincinnati night. It took extra innings for the home town Beergardners to notch a 3-1 win on a two run walk off by Roger Hornsby.

Federal League Games April 26th
Pitching was the name of the game at Penmar Park, although ultimately it was a pair of 6th inning home runs from home town favorites Josh Gibson and "Bullet Joe" Rogan that carried the Liberty to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Pilgrims from Boston. Likewise, Boston's only run came on a solo shot from right fielder Hank Aaron. The same weather system bogging down offenses in Philadelphia affected Washington, DC as well as New Orleans and Washington deadlocked at 3-3 after the statutory nine. Washington carried the day in the 10th after Jazz King reliever Ted Trent walked home the game winner. Trent had allowed the Senators to score twice and tie the game in the ninth. His control, clearly affected by the cold and rain, was sorely lacking as he walked four batters in his 1.3 innings. New Yorkers, however, enjoyed sunshine and cloudless skies for their battle with Pittsburgh. They enjoyed the strong pitching of Grays' starter Don Sutton and the late inning heroics of Roy Campanella less. Campy responded to a late effort by the Knights to knot the game at 2 in the 8th with a 9th inning solo shot, providing reliever Jose Mendez a chance at a save that he did not fail to grasp.

Trade Notice
Federal League Player of the Week
"Cannonball Dick" Redding
The Federal League's Player of the Week is "Cannonball Dick" Redding. After an initial loss to the Philadelphia Liberty in which he yielded four runs, Redding has been dominant, winning three starts in four decisions, and allowing only 3 runs in 31 innings. He'll be a key part of Boston's efforts to win the pennant in league that looks to enjoy a much closer pennant race at this point.
In real life, Redding played for a plethora of Negro League teams, mostly for the Brooklyn Royal Giants. Like many Negro League stars, he also played other positions - the outfield and first base - in addition to pitching. "Cannonball Dick" has overpowering speed, and used it to claim 30 no hitters during his professional career.
Redding enjoyed a tremendous rookie year with the Lincoln Giants, at one point reeling off 17 straight wins. Redding's trademark was stamina - throwing both ends of a double header two or three days in a row. His prime years were during the 1910s, and he lost some of his best years to WW1.
Continental League Player of the Week
Dan Brouthers
Dan Brouthers is this week's Continental League player of the week. He didn't get a start until April 16th, but has been seeing a lot of playing time as the Model T's first baseman since then.
Brouthers was one of the first slugging stars of the National League in the 19th century, playing for such teams as the Troy Trojans, Buffalo Bisons, and Detroit Wolverines. As the Vice President of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, he was one of the "big name" stars that defected to John Montgomery Ward's Players League for the 1890 season and played the 1891 season in the American Association prior to returning to the NL in 1892, where he remained.
Brouthers stood 6'2" and weighed 207 pounds, which was big for the era, earning the nickname "Big Dan."
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Old Timers Committee in 1945.
