Trade Notice - May 9th
The Federal League President's office has approved the trade of Jim Bunning from New Orleans to Philadelphia in exchange for Dave Malarcher and Ted Lyons. Bunning is 3-3 with a 3.76 ERA. Lyons is 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA. Malarcher is a utility fielder who has yet to see playing time this season.

Nichols(2-2) earned his pay with a solid performance for Washington. He went
9 innings surrendering 9 hits and 1 walk. Washington rapped out 15 hits for
the afternoon.

plate appearance was by Turkey Stearnes who electrified Terrapin Park when he
electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam home run. Detroit had a chance to
come back in the 9th but they came up short.
The win was credited to Tom Williams(3-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Williams got help from Roosevelt Davis who was credited with his 2nd
save. Webster McDonald(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.
'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Detroit's manager said. 'We

Robin Roberts(4-5) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory.
He gave up 8 hits and no walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Kansas City had 18
hits overall, while Nashville had 10.
Whitey Ford earned the save, his 4th. Phil Niekro(1-4) took the loss. He
allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Joe McGinnity shut down the Cincinnati batters on just 3 hits at Schorling
Park as the Chicago White Bears beat the Cincinnati Beergardeners by the

McGinnity(4-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the Cincinnati batters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.64 to 3.05. Cincinnati was retired
without difficulty in the 9th.
Ray Brown(2-4) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 4 hits
and 5 walks. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think
I'm hitting a good groove.' McGinnity said after the game. 'I'm ready to
start another game tomorrow!'

run in the 9th inning. Washington finished with 16 hits in the victory.
Bell(2-5), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Eddie
Plank(2-3) suffered the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs

held on to win over the Nashville Commodores by a score of 3 to 1 at Martin
Park.
Kansas City came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring
3 runs using 5 hits. After an out was recorded, Hack Wilson initiated the
scoring spurt when he singled. One out later, Buck Ewing stepped up to the
plate and he lashed a single. Frank Warfield then hit a single. Hughie
Jennings was up next and he doubled. Ray Dandridge came to the plate and
laced a base-knock. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the
6th inning.
Rollie Fingers(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Fingers was
helped out by Herb Pennock who recorded his 2nd save. Hoyt Wilhelm(0-3) was
hit with the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 8 and 2/3 innings.
'The only way this one could have been better', said Fingers, 'was if we had

May 7th - Trade Notice
The Continental League President's office announced that it had approved the trade of Jim Palmer from the Detroit Model Ts to the Nashville Commodores in exchange of Pud Galvin.
While Palmer has slightly better looking numbers, Galvin has thrown back to back shutouts in his last two starts, one of which was against Detroit.

to the plate and he popped a two-run clout over the fence. Two outs later
Wee Willie Keeler came to the plate and drew a walk. Home Run Baker came up

Ty Cobb homered and Walter Johnson had a strong outing at Yankee Stadium as
the Philadelphia Liberty beat the New York Knights by the count of 2 to
1.
In the top of the 3rd inning Philadelphia scored 2 runs. That was all the
runs Johnson(5-1) needed. New York had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.
Leroy Matlock got the save, his 1st. Ferguson Jenkins(2-5) took the loss.
'Some losses are harder to take than others' New York's manager lamented
after the game. 'This was one of them.'

In a good matchup it was the Boston Pilgrims 5, the Washington Senators 3 at
Braves Field.
Boston scored 4 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 5 hits. The key
at-bat was by Roberto Clemente who elicited a roar from the hometown fans
when he popped a two-run clout over the fence. Washington threatened in the
9th but Boston was able to put down the rally.
Ed Walsh(2-4) allowed 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Walsh was helped out by Sam Streeter who recorded his 3rd save. Harry
Salmon(1-4) was tagged with the loss. His ERA increased from 4.15 to 4.50 as
he allowed 4 runs in 5 innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Washington's
manager said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard
to take.'

Bill Byrd tossed a complete game and Frankie Frisch hit a homerun as the
Pittsburgh Grays beat the New Orleans Jazz Kings by a score of 7 to
2.
Pittsburgh tallied 6 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 5 hits. The
critical plate appearance was by Chick Hafey who thrilled the crowd when he
ripped a base-knock bringing in two baserunners. Pittsburgh had a total of
11 hits for the game.
Byrd(4-3) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Gaylord
Perry(2-3) was charged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and
4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

allowing 12 hits and 2 walks. Detroit finished with 13 hits in the victory.
Amos Rusie(1-4) was the losing pitcher. He served up 3 gopher balls in 7
innings. 'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Joss,

Shortstop Hughie Jennings had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the Kansas City
Cattle Barons defeated the Chicago White Bears in 13 innings 10 to 3 at
Schorling Park.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Kansas City came out the
victor in the 13th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Buck Ewing
who silenced the stadium when he doubled plating two runs. Kansas City bats
were very productive in the 13th inning when they had 7 runs on 7 hits.
Kansas City out-hit Chicago for the game, 20 hits to 12.
The win was credited to Leon Day(3-4) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Mickey Welch(1-2) was given the loss in relief. He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Nashville went ahead in the 3rd
inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. After two were out Home Run Johnson
singled. Snider next to the plate and he laced a single. Tony Perez then
delivered a base-hit. St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.
The win went to Red Faber(3-3) who allowed no runs in 7 innings. Hoyt Wilhelm
recorded the save, his 2nd. The loss was charged to Bill Holland(2-3).
St. Louis' manager was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in
the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

who went 5 innings allowing 4 runs. John Clarkson recorded the save, his 4th.

The game started off with Washington taking the lead in the first when they
scored 5 runs on 4 hits. That early run support was enough for Ryan(4-1) and
Washington. Washington had a total of 13 hits for the game.
Dick Redding(3-3) took the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered
4 hits and 1 walk. 'After the stretch we have been through lately, this
victory is especially sweet' offered Washington's manager. Now, we just have
to make this the norm - not the exception!'

Willie Wells had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Grays were badly beaten by
the New Orleans Jazz Kings, 13 to 2.
Wells had a good day at the plate. He laced a base-hit in the 5th inning,
doubled which scored a run in the 6th inning, cracked a solo homerun in the
8th inning and banged out a single which plated a run in the 9th inning. New
Orleans provided plenty of action in the 6th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits.
Offensively, New Orleans was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate
innings.
Eggie Hensley(3-1) allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. The loss was charged to Christy Mathewson(2-3). He was knocked
around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
New Orleans now has a record of 16-13. With the loss, Pittsburgh has a record
of 7-3 lately, 16-13 overall.

hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Cincinnati was retired
without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.
Dean(2-5) went the distance for the shutout. Ray Brown(2-3) took the loss.
Dean was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of the
game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked. My arm felt
great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings. I only hope
that I can do it again next time out!'

Both leagues have agreed to change their rules to allow injured players to return to their teams when feasible rather than sitting out a minimum of 15 days.

Trade Notice
The Federal League President's office announced that the Pittsburgh Grays have agreed to trade Pete Hill to the New York Knights in exchange for Billy Hamilton.

First baseman Willie McCovey lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI
as the St. Louis River Captains defeated the Kansas City Cattle Barons by a
score of 8 to 4 at Terrapin Park.
Warren Spahn(1-4) earned his pay with a solid performance for St. Louis. He
went 8 innings surrendering 9 hits and 1 walk lowering his ERA from 5.06 to
4.73. St. Louis totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.
Carl Hubbell(2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 2 innings.
CINCINNATI AT CHICAGO

Radbourn gave Chicago a solid outing. He allowed 7 hits and no walks in 6
innings lowering his ERA from 4.35 to 3.99. Chicago had 8 hits for the
afternoon.

Frankie Frisch had 2 base hits at Forbes Field where the Pittsburgh Grays beat
the Philadelphia Liberty by the score of 6 to 4.
Philadelphia never recovered after Pittsburgh took the lead in the bottom of
the 7th inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Philadelphia threatened in
the 9th but their rally came up short.
The winning pitcher was Rube Foster(4-1) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 1/3
innings. Jose Mendez recorded the save, his 5th. Ted Lyons(1-2) was the
losing pitcher.

At Dodger Stadium the New Orleans Jazz Kings easily handled the Washington
Senators by the score of 5 to 1.
Jim Bunning(2-3) pitched a solid game. He surrendered 7 hits and no walks in
6 and 2/3 innings. Bunning struckout 8 Washington batters reducing his ERA
from 4.54 to 4.10. New Orleans had 11 hits overall, while Washington had 8.
William Bell(1-5) was hit with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9
hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
NEW YORK AT BOSTON

Bill Drake pitched a complete game at Braves Field where the New York Knights
beat the Boston Pilgrims by the score of 4 to 1.
New York delivered all the runs required in the 1st inning when they tallied 4
runs on 4 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. The pitchers
took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was able to score again.
Drake(2-3) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Red
Ruffing(0-1) took the loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing
an earned run in his 7 innings of work.
With this win, New York has a 12-16 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With
this loss, Boston has a 4-6 record of late, 13-15 overall.

Trade Notice
The office of the Continental League President announced that the St. Louis River Captains have arranged to trade "Superman" Pennington to the Cincinnati Beergardners for George Kell.
