Don Drysdale went the distance and John Beckwith hit a homerun and had 3 RBI
as the Detroit Model Ts defeated the St. Louis River Captains by a score of
11 to 3 at Terrapin Park.
 
Detroit drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
scoring 5 runners on 5 hits.  That early scoring held up.  Detroit rapped out
15 hits for the night.  
 
Drysdale(6-0) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Warren Spahn(1-5)
took the loss.  He surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning.

In a thriller the Kansas City Cattle Barons staged a dramatic comeback then
held on to win over the Nashville Commodores by a score of 3 to 1 at Martin
Park.
 
Kansas City came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring
3 runs using 5 hits.  After an out was recorded, Hack Wilson initiated the
scoring spurt when he singled.  One out later, Buck Ewing stepped up to the
plate and he lashed a single.  Frank Warfield then hit a single.  Hughie
Jennings was up next and he doubled.  Ray Dandridge came to the plate and
laced a base-knock.  The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the
6th inning.  
 
Rollie Fingers(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Fingers was
helped out by Herb Pennock who recorded his 2nd save.  Hoyt Wilhelm(0-3) was
hit with the loss.  He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 8 and 2/3 innings.
 
'The only way this one could have been better', said Fingers, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
 
CINCINNATI AT CHICAGO

Buck O'Neil had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Steve Carlton mowed down 13 Chicago
batters as the Cincinnati Beergardeners defeated the Chicago White Bears 5 to
4 at Schorling Park.
 
Carlton(2-3) pitched a fine game.  He was reached for 10 hits and 3 walks in 8
and 1/3 innings and served up 2 'big flies'.  Chicago threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.  
 
Slim Jones earned his 3rd save.  The loss was charged to Old Hoss
Radbourn(3-4).  He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
 
Carlton was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty
confident in my pitches tonight.  But, I had great support behind me and I
just threw what was called.  That was an extremely well called game!'
